272 The Ascension. South Germany about 130 0. Beautiful
miniature painted in colours within a large initial U (12,5X10 cm)
and heightened with gold. Vellum leaf (51X35 cm) from a Gra-
duale. Frs. 1200.—
Beautiful early miniature painted in simple colours in a primitive style
evidently influenced by Irish, ornamentation. The letter formed by a dragon
includes Maria and 8 apostles kneeling and praying. The centre occupies the
mountains, above Christ of which the foot only are visible and two angels.
.Nine lines of text and notes written in both sides in black and red are inter-
spersed with initials.
Very fine specimen of early German miniature pain-
ting in best conservation.
273 Christus standing at the Galilean sea and calling St. Peter and
St. Andrew. Austria, last half of the XIV th century.
Delicate miniature painted in low colours within a large initial
D (12X13,5 cm) heightened with chiseled gold and ornated with
large floral scrolls. Vellum leaf (55,5X37,5 cm) from a Francis-
can Graduale. Frs. 800.—
Nice miniature painting of the Upper Germany or Austrian school.
' Christus is standing outside the town, to the left, calling the saints sitting in
two boats and drawing up the net. In the background mountains are visible.
The finely painted floral scrolls cover three sides of the pages. 6 lines of text
and musical notes are written on recto and verso, with some initials in red
and blue. Well preserved specimen, only a short rent anciently re-
stored.
274 The Crucifix with Maria and S. John. Germany about 1300.
Large Pen drawing in black and red, coloured in different co-
lours. Canon picture. Vellum leaf (32X22 cm) from a Missal.
Frs. 2400.—
A most interesting German Canon picture in unusual form. The cruci-
fix is put into a chapel with two turrets. The background is filled with a orna-
mental leafy pattern, drawn in blue and red. The presenter in armour and red
cowl is kneeling on the left.
The reverse contains 10 lines of musical notes and text in 2 cols. Well
preserved, a short rent in the right margin, in the centre a little piece slightly
rubbed.

S (13X10 cm) and heightened with gold. Vellum leaf (51X34,5 cm)
from a Graduale. Frs. 1200.—
