The first edition of the ,.Carolina" the criminal statute of the Emperor Charles V, and
the first common German penal code with criminal procedure, which was passed into the law of
the empire at the Diet of Regensburg in 1532. The general conceptions of complicity, attempt,
selfdefence <fic., are suitably discussed and a number of special crimes fixed exactly.
The first three leaves carefully repaired on the righthand blank margins, there are a few
stains in upper margins, between fol. 31 and 32 is inserted a MS. copy of the passages printed on
fol. 31 verso, not belonging to the original text.
A good and perfect copy of the rare first German penal code.

arms of the author on verso of title, 10 full-page woodcuts (the first
of which finely coloured) and a double-page map of Bruges from the

Brunet II, 480. Funck, Le livre beige A gravures, p. 301. An important juridical work on
the protection of orphan-childs with very remarkable cuts representing pleadings. Of special
interest is the view of Bruges which is to be befound only in this edition; this woodcut bears
on verso the explanations and the name of the designer with date (Marcus Gerardus, 1563).
Very rare.

First German edition. Rare. Pages 120—140 treat on „De Subhastatione. Vom ver-
gandten n. offentl. Verkauffen" ... an interesting document for the history of commerce in
Flanders in the time of the author, who was born at Brugge in 1507 and died in 1581.
The woodcuts, which are important for the science of costume, represent notaries’ offices,
judges, tutors, wards a. s. o. Good copy.

Annotationen
