A New Find of Roman Denarii in Chmielów
Świętokrzyski15, Pokrzywnica, Sarnia Zwoła16, Skały, Sosnówka (Rudki),
Stara Słupia, Trzeszków17. Other finds in this area include a hoard of Sta-
rachowice18, which new research has shown to contain forgeries as well
as coins derived perhaps from deposits discovered in Nietulisko Małe,
Chmielów Piaskowy, or Nowa Słupia19.
A clarification is in order for the find of one denarius of Antoninus
Pius at the village of Gromadzice. In the inventory book of the Archaeolo-
gical Museum of Cracow, it is entered at MAK/HM/81:1 cat. no. V/199
as a denarius of Hadrian. Now temporarily kept at the Cracow Archeolo-
gical Museum's Numismatic Section, it has been correctly identified as
a denarius of Antoninus Pius. A picture of this coin, with identical legend
markings, is found in a report by Kazimierz Bielenin published in Mate-
riały Archeologiczne20' and yet in the text of his report21, it is described as
a denarius of Trajan. Eąually wrongly, the coin is referred to as a Trajan
denarius from Goradzice22
Settlement sites, cemetaries, hoards and single coin finds, including
the newly discovered Chmielów denarii, occur in the fringe of the hi-
ghest concentration of smelting furnaces (Fig. 2). At the same time, there
is a concentration of settlement sites and coin finds in the central Święto-
krzyski region of ancient iron metallurgy in the valley of the river Pokrzy-
wianka and its large right-hand tributaries: Słupianka and Dobruchna,
and also in the Kamienna valley, which marks the northern periphery
of iron working sites concentration. Importantly, by far the most coins
found, whether single denarii or hoards, datę from the second half of the
first and the second centuries (Table 1). The most recent coins unearthed
are a follis of Constantine the Great (306-337) in Łysa Góra (environs),
