Sławomir Sprawski

into Greek warfare. Unfortunately, he managed to publish only two short
articles drawing from this lorę: „Zbrojnie i nocą" [Armed, Shrouded in
Night] (Góry no. 1,1991, p. 13) and „Skrzydlaci żołnierze - oddział specjal-
ny w armii Aleksandra Macedońskiego" [Winged Soldiers - Alexander
the Great's Special Troops] (Zeszyty Naukowe Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego,
Prace historyczne, fasc. 117, Kraków 1995, pp. 21-29). In the latter, he stop-
ped to examine an episode in Alexander's Central Asian campaign in
which 300 Macedonians captured the Sogdian Rock. Performing a close
analysis of the evidence given by Arrian and Curtius Rufus, he demon-
strated that it was ąuite impossible for such a feat to be accomplished
by a random band of volunteers. The eąuipment, the techniąues used to
negotiate the incline as described in the sources, and above all the sheer
difficulty of the task all suggest that Alexander's army must have posses-
sed its own commandos.

Stanisław Kalita was always eager to popularize knowledge of the An-
tiąuity. An interesting example were the courses he taught to secondary
school students on board the Zawisza Czarny while cruising the Mediter-
ranean.

He also contributed articles on the history of Egypt and the Middle
East in the Hellenistic period which were part of a publication meant for
a wide readership: Wielka Historia Świata [A Comprehensive History of
the World] (vol. IV, „Imperium Achemenidów (600-330 p.n.e.)", Kraków
2000, pp. 151-182; vol. V, „Azja w epoce hellenistycznej" and „Państwo
Ptolemeuszy", Kraków 2000, pp. 65-110 and 111-134). Another contribu-
tion on early mountaineering in the Tatras was published in Vol. VIII of
Wielka Historia Polski [A Comprehensive History of Poland] by J. Buszko
(Od niewoli do niepodległości (1864-1918), Kraków 2000, pp. 331-334).

He passed away suddenly, after a short and violent illness, leaving
grief and an absence among his farnily and his many friends. He was
buried in Salwator Cemetery in Cracow.
