Obfervations in Survey os the Earth.
seer of Nero's affairs, and Steward of his Court,Medows
and Olive-trees were removed from a common high-
way side, and placed a good way off on the contrary
side : so whereas they flood before on the right hand,
as one travelled, they were now on the left hand. The
like hapned within these few years to Pleurs3 a Town
of the Grisons among the Alpes.
Lastly, Let us take a view of the Earth it self, which
because it was divided with the Sea, Rivers, Marshes,
8ec. yet making one absolute Circle, Homer calleth it
and for this cause Numa Pompil'm dedicated
a Temple to Vefta in a round form : the roundnesse of
it is proved of Mathematicians by Ihadows of Dials,
and the Eclipses* also by descent of all heavy things to
the Center, it self being the Center of the Universe,
as Aristotle and Ptolerney affirm.
Now in respe&of Heaven,it is sosmall a point, that
the least Star is notdarkenrd with the (hadow th reof:
for if the smallest Star, albeit, in judgement of our
sense, seeming but a prick or point, yet far exceedeth
the body of the Earth in greatnesse, it follovreth in
respeft of Heaven, that the Earth mud seem as little.
Bcside, if the Earth were of any quantity in respest
os the higher Orbs, the .Stars should seem bigger or
lesse in regard of those Hj/psomata. ( Altitudes ) or the
Climes : but it is certain that at the self same time,
sundry Astrcnomers find the same bignesse and eleva-
tion of the self same Jtar observed by their calculati-
on,^ differ no whit at all: whereby we may see if that
distance of place which is on the Earth ( in respeft of
the heavenly Orbs) exceedeth all sense, ic follows that
the Earth (poor little point as it is) seems the like, if
it be compared with Heaven: yet this is that point,
which with fire and sword, is divid d among so many
Nations, che matter of our glory, our seat.* here we
have our Honours, our Armies, our Commands; here
we heap up riches, at perpetual war and firif among
curselveSj, who ( like the Toad) shall fall asleep with
