What might surprise in this analysis in the first place is the difficulty to demon-
strate the continuation of the anti-Teutonic visual stereotypes, such as those sugges-
tively presented in older Polish art. Secondly, they had not been replaced by any new
presentations that could be morę generally applied. Thirdly, what remains elear is the
predominance of presentations referring to the Grunwald episode, overshadowing any
other events connected with the Polish-Teutonic relations. Fourthly, the manner of
presenting the Teutonic knights was dominated by some form of a picturesąue aspect
of the mediaeval figurę of a knight in generał, overriding or marginalizing the definite
negative features previously attributed to the Teutonic Order. And fifthly, in the peri-
od in ąuestion there appeared humorous approaches to the Grunwald and Teutonic
topics, previously simply unthinkable.
Ali this suggests that despite a strong political tension in the Polish-German rela-
tions in the first post WW II decades, the images presented to young readers in the
magazines addressed to them did not generally reveal any elear anti-Teutonic or
anti-German propaganda stresses, possibly leaving the unambiguous condemnation
of the Teutonic defaults to the textual layer. A similar tendency could, in fact, be traced
in textbooks, illustrations accompanying Teutonic topics in fiction, images illustrating
academic publications for generał public, etc. This may testify to the gradual erosion of
the ways to illustrate the Polish-Teutonic conflict inherited from the 19th century.
