Furthermore, there is another unique feature worth pointing to, i.e., the personifi-
cations of seven planets with the sings of the zodiac, paralleled with seven Virtu.es in
the panels opposite, all these painted on the obverses of the fixed wings, in the framing
of the scenes from the life of Mary and Jesus’ childhood. Representations of planets
were an extremely scarce topie in church decors, with rare examples to be found only
in 14th- 16th-century Italy. No other altarpiece whose pictorial programme showed
representations of all the planets known at the time is known of. The Author’s separate
