THE ILLUSTRATED EXHIBITOR.

69

A remarkable group of French
Dronzcs—taken from the contributions
of MM. Yittoz (1530) and Matifat
(923), both of which manufacturers
have contributed artistic ornaments,
clocks, chandeliers, cups, lustres, vases,
and articles of vertu—graces the pre-
sent page.

The male figure of this group repre-
sents Eenvcmito Cellini, the celebrated
sculptor, and would seem to have been
designed with a view to associate the
grand with the beautiful. The atti-
tude is not without spirit, whilst the
expression of the countenance would
seem to bo that of a noble character
conscious of the inherent power

of his own genius. The vase he
carries in his arm is, no doubt, in-
tended to emblemise the profession
ho so successfully pursued.

Cellini was an eminent statuary,
jeweller, and goldsmith, contemporary;
With Michael Angelo and Julio Ro-
mano, and was employed by Popes,
Kings, and other princely patrons of
science and art, in the time of Leo X.
and Charles V. His productions are
exquisite in design and execution. Ho
lived to a considerable age, and his
life almost to the last was a Series of
adventures, persecutions, and misfor-
tunes. Ho wrote the history of his;
own life, which has been well trans-

lated by Roscoe. He was born at Florence in 1500, and
died in the city of his birth, February 13, 1570.
The column and the fountain in the same group are the

productions of Matifat; the former is intended as a gas
candelabrum, and the latter for a garden ornament. They
are both beautiful specimens of art of that mixed kind
