ignorant of the forma of civilised life,
Australia, who, when discovered, knew not
—to decorate their persons with such
gems and stones as were availahle ; suffice
it that the fact remains, and must remain,
a puzzle to the thoughtful and a mystery
to the wise.

Our present purpose is simply to direct
attention to two groups we have selected
from the Queen of Spain's jewels. They
are exhibited by Her Majesty's jeweller,
M. Lemonniere, of Paris, nnd are esteemed
as the best specimens of well-set gems
which the Crystal Palace can boast. They
consist principally of diamonds, pearls,
rubies, and emeralds, the diamonds greatly
preponderating; and really, despite all
our amazement at the weakness of people
in wearing jewellery, we cannot find it in
our hearts to blame them—especially the

entire height is about six inches, and
"We understand that the artist modelled
it from a common plaster bust, and
never had the opportunity of seeing
the Prince. There has also arrived in
the compartment of Rome a fine folio
set of the works of the illustrious
architect Canina, with superb plates.
There are four of these large folio
volumes beautifully bound in parch-
ment, the subjects being ancient archi-
tecture, Christian architecture, the
edifices of Ro v e, and the topography
of that city. The engravings illus-
trative of the letter-press are masterly,
and the whole work is of the most
magnificent character.

ladies—when we gaze on the originals of the
groups our artist has so ably delineated.

Some very valuable and interesting articles for
exhibition were received lately. In the depart-
ment of Rome will be seen a model of the column
of Trajan (in Oriental alabaster) with the statue
on the summit (of bronze), about two feet high ;
value, £40. This is a beautiful work; the quality
of the Oriental alabaster is exceedingly fine, and
the vein and polish are equally exquisite. There
is also a small bust of
Prince Albert, exe-
cuted by the cele

brated Cipriani of Rome, in a fine, rare, and rich flesh-
coloured marble, called gerlloantico upon a pedestal of

hither by the Great Exhibition, has just re-
ceived a very novel addition by the arrival of a
Chinese family of rank from Canton. These
interesting personages consist of a Chinese
gentleman of the name of Chung-attai, and his
wife Ahap, accompanied by her two sisters, and
attended by a female domestic. The three
ladies possess the genuine small feet constituting
the peculiar characteristic of the higher class
females in the Celestial Empire. Her Majesty-
has been graciously pleased to convey her royal

commands to the
ladies, through Col.
Phipps, that they will

take an early opportunity o± proceeding to Osborne Since
writing the above, we understand the visit has been made.
