Trompés par le monogramme dont les trois frères Hopffer
(1510-1550) signaient souvent leurs planches, et qui représente
une grappe de houblon (en allemand hopfen), les amateurs ont
longtemps attribué leurs ouvrages à un maître imaginaire que
l'abbé de Marolles, dont la collection renfermait deux cent vingt-
cinq pièces de ces artistes, a nommé le Maître au Chandelier.
Nous aurons ultérieurement l'occasion de reproduire ce mono-
gramme avec d'autres pièces décoratives de même provenance,
et qui jouent un rôle important dans l'histoire des origines de la
ttravure àl'eatlr-forte.Malgré sesirrégularitésdedessin, laplanche
dite des trois Vases est fort estimée, des amateurs quand elle ne

The monogram with which the three brothers Hopffer (1510-
•1550) often signed their works, and which represents a bunch of
hop, has abused the amateurs. Their pièces have long been atti-i-
butcd to an imaginary master whom the abbot of Marolles calls
the Master with the lamp. We will subsequently reproduce this
monogram as well as décorative pièces of the same artists, which
play rather an important part in the history of etching by aqua
fortis. Notwithstanding the irregularities of the drawing, the
plate here above, said of the three Vases, is held in great esteem
by amateurs, especially when it does not bear the number with
which David Funck of Nuremberg has maAed a totality of 230
plates bought by him. — (Fac-similé.)
