and wafhcd over. It requires no other preparation
for ufe than to be well around with oil, unlcfs when
it is ufed in miniature painting—when it fhouid be
wafhed over with the utmoft care.

SPANISH BRO \V N,

Refembles the Venetian red very much in colour,
but is fouler : it is a native pigment and ufed much
in the fame fhate nature produces it : being dug up
in feveral parts of England. No other preparation
is needful than freeing; it well from ftones and filth,
and grinding it with oil to render it fit for cclour-
men, in the preparation of cloths for pictures, and
other coaife work.

Calcined or burnt TERRA di S I E N N A,

Is originally yellow ;. but when modcratelv cal-
cined becomes an orange red, though not verv
bright. It is a native oker, brought hither from
Italy in the ftate in which it is naturallv found. It
is calcined by putting lumps of it either in a cruci-
ble, or naked in a common fire, and continuing it
there till the colour be changed from vellow to red.
It is exceedingly uleful in oil-painting, and admits
of no adulteration: it may be diiLin'TUifhed from
other ochrous earths by its iemi-tranlparency.
