the beft of the more modern.

££ Take the lapis lazuli, and break it into very
" fmall pieces, or rather a grofs powder : put it into
<; a crucible, and cover it lecurely, to prevent the
£; coals from falling amonail it. Calcine it then
with a ftrong fire, for an hour, if there, be any
M large quantitv, or lefs time in proportion ; and
': quench it, when taken out of the fire, in vinegar,
" ftirring them well together; and fuffer it to re-
" main in that ftate for a day or two. Pour off
£: then the vinegar, except what may be decenary
£: for moiftening the calcined lapis lazuli in grind-
" ing ; whicli operation it muft then undergo, iri
££ a mortar of flint or glafs, till reduced to the great-
t: eft degree of finenefs thofe means may effect.
££ But, il it appear vet too hard to be eafilv ground,
£: give it another fhort calcination, and quench it a
£i fecond time in vinegar. The vinegar mud then be
££ wafhed off from the powder, by the putting to it
" feveral fucceffive quantities of clean water; each
£: of which mull be poured off when the lapis lazuli
': has been well ftirred about in them, and is again
££ fettled to the bottom. It muft then be ground on
a porphyry ftone, with a mullar, till it be pcrfect-
£ ly impalpable, and then dried : in which ftate it is
; duly prepared to mix with the following cement.
<£ Take of Burgundy pitch nine ounces—of white
reiki, and Venice turpentine, fix ounces — of vir-
il gin wax one ounce and half—and of linfeed oil
'; one ounce and a quarter; mix them together by
•• melting in a pipkin over the fire ; and fuffer them
t; to boil till they acquire- fo ft iff a confiftence, that
i: being dropt into water while of this boiling heat.
