146 THE ARTIST'S ASSISTANT,

likewife in fome compofitions of fluxes for the
colours. It makes a lefs foft enamel than the lead,
but is free from yellow, or any other colour ; and
therefore proper for fome purpofes.

Borax is a fait of very peculiar qualities ; amcng't
which, is that of promoting vitrification, and the
fufion of any glafs when vitrified, in a greater degree
than any other fubftance known ; on which account
it is of the greatcft confequence, in forming fluxes
for enamel. It requires, nevertheless, either to be
previoufly calcined or brought to a vitreous ilate,
which it fullers from the application of moderate
heat alone; and it muft alio be finely powdered
before it be mixed with other ingredients in fluxes.
Its ufe is not much known in common practice ;
though of the greateft confequence to the art of
enamelling. As not only a fet of fofter colours may
be produced by the aid of it, than can be other-
wife had ; but the degree of each may be brought
to correlpond, by the employing it in different pro-
portions, according to the refpeftive hardnefs of the
other ingredients, which differ fo much, as not to
be regulated juftly by any other means.

Common lalt may be alfo ufed as a flux in ena-
melling, particularly where there is occafion for
glazings : as it is not only extremely fluid, and free
of tenacity when ufed, but alfo lefs fubjeft to crack
than any other vitreous body whatever. But for
fluxes for grounds and colours in enamel, it is not
frequently necelfary to multiply ingredients, as the
above three Jubilances may, when properly applied,
fufficicntly anfwer rnoft purpofes. The fame reason-
ing extends to nitre and arfenic ; which, thouoh
they have the qualities of fluxes, pofiefs yet along with

them
