i63 THE ARTIST'S ASSISTANT.

Of red japan grounds.—For a fcarlet japan ground,
vermillion may be ufed. But the veimitlion alone
has a glaring effeft, that renders it much lefs beau-
ful than the crimlon oroduced by elazin? it over
with carmine or fine lake ; or even with rofe pink.,
which has a very good effect ufed for this purpofe.
For a very bright crimfon, ncverthclefs, inftead of
glazing with carmine, the Indian lake, known in
ihops by the name of fafflower, fhould be ufed, dif-
folved in the fpirit o' which the varnifh is com-
pounded (which it readily admits of when good).
But in this cafe, inflead of cdazinar with the fhcll-
lac varnifh, the upper or polifhing coats need only
be ufed ; as they will equallv receive and convey
the tinge of the Indian lake. Which mavbe actually

this kind of lake. For it does not appear that more
than one confidcrable quantity was ever brought
over, and put into the hands of colourmen ; and
this being now expended, they have not the means
of a frefh fupply. It, however, may be cafily had
from the fame place whence the former quantity was
procured, by anv perfons who go thither in the Eail
India company's fhips.

Of yellow japan grounds.—For bright yellow
grounds, king's yellow, or turpeth mineral, fhould be
employed, either alone or mixed with fine Dutch
pink. The effect may be ftill more heightened, bv
diffolving powdered turmeric root in the fpirit of
wine, of which the upper or polifhing coat is made;
