THE ARTIST'S ASSISTANT. 187

The above is the cheapeft method ; but a very fine
black may be produced, by brufhing the wood feve-
ral times over with a folution of copper in aquafor-
tis ; and afterwards with the decoftion of logwood,
which muft be repeated till the colour be of fuffi-
cient force ; and the greennefs produced by the fo-
lution of the copper, wholly overcome. Thefe
blacks may be varnifhed as the other colours.

"Where the ftains are defired to be very ftrong, as
in the cafe of wood intended to be ufed for fineering,
it is in general neceffary they fhould be foaked,
and not brufhed; to render which the more practi-
cable, the wood maybe previoufly flit, or fawed into
pieces of a proper thicknefs for inlaying.

It is to be underftood alfo, that when the wood is
above ordered to be brufhed feveral times over with,
the tinging fubftances, it fhould be fuffered to dry
betwixt each time.

Of ftaining ivory, bone, or horn, yellow.—Boil
them fir ft in a folution of alum, in the proportion
of one pound to two quarts of water ; and then
prepare a tinfture of the French berries, by boiling
lialf a pound of the berries, pounded, in a gallon
of water, with a quarter of a pound of pearl allies.
After this tincture has boiled about an hour, put the
ivory, &c. previoufly boiled in the alum water, into
it, and let them remain there half an hour.

If turmeric root be ufed, inftead of the French
berries, a brighter yellow may be obtained ; but the
ivory, &c. muft in that cafe be again dipt in alum
water, after it is taken out of the tincture, other-
wife an orange colour, not a yellow, will be pro-
duced, from the effect of the pearl afhes on the
turmeric,
