THE ARTIST'S ASSISTANT. 227

in water, ftirring it about with a wooden fpatula,
u till it become of a pafty fubftance, and appears to
t! have loft its cohefion : pour oft then the water
u from it, and beat it in a mortar, or fuch kind of
!i machine as will have the fame efFeft, till it be per-
<: fecily foft and yielding pulp. Prepare, in the mean
<c time, a ftrong gum water, by diffolving gum-arabic
" in water ; and, having preffed the greateft part of
" the water out of the pulp, add the gum water to it,
in fuch proportion, that they produce together the
<£ confiftence of a thick fluid. Put them then into a
<! proper veffel, and boil them {lowly, till they form
l: a pafte of the right confiftence for calling." The
papier mache will then be ready prepared for work-
ing with the proper moulds ; but the ftiffnefs of the
pafte may be varied according to the nature of
the work. That intended forpieces where the figure
is fimple, and has no fharp or emboffed work, re-
quiring to be ftiffcr, while emboffed work, or other,
fuch as has relieved parts, fhould be thinner. The
ufing g!ue or fize, inftead of gum-arabic, makes a
faving, and will anfwer extremely well in the cafe
of boxes, or any other pieces of a ample or flat form ;
becaufe the fhrinking may be allowed for in the
figure of the moulds ; but for emboffed work, or de-
figns, where feveral parts mull be joined together,
the ufe of gum-arabic will be found more expedient ;
as the relative proportions will be much better
prcferved.

The moulds, m which the papier mache is caft, may
be either of plaifter of Paris or wood. For emboffed
work, or deligns of a more complex kind, plaifter
is preferable; but for boxes, cups, or 'ampler forms,
the moulds may be beft of wood, as luch will la it
