compendious description of Asia. The introduction includes some chapters on the division of the
earth into four islands, the possibility of circumnavigating the combined continents of Europe,
Asia and Africa, and accounts of the climate of the tropics and of the arctic regions.
This work had the greatest influence on COLUMBUS and the
other explorers of his time. Columbus must have used this book himself because
we find, in the Bibliotheca Columbina at Sevilla, a copy of this edition coming from Colum-
bus's library. That copy contains the famous letter by Toscanelli to Fernam Martinez in 1474 in
the handwriting of Christopher Columbus. See Harrisse, Additions, p. XV—XVIII, where
the complete letter is reproduced.
An extraordinarily large copy in an unusually faultless condition.
