The most celebrated encyclopaedia of the Middle Ages. Our edition is
certainly one of the most interesting and most complete one in the French
language of the 15th century. It contains not only all illustrations found in a
few other editions printed at Lyons, but also a 17-page supplement illustrated
by 2 further cuts here printed for the first time.
This most interesting encyclopaedia was written in the 14th century by
the English Franciscan Friar, Bartholomaeus, theologian and more espe-
cially natural philosopher at Paris (1225—30) and Magdeburg (1230—75). It em-
braces the entire scientif. knowledge of that period. There are thus to be found
many important chapters on the Natural Sciences, e. g. Botany, Astronomy,
Meteorology, Mineralogy, etc. Music, Hunting, Geography with topographical
descriptions of ,Asia‘, ,Alemania1, .Britannia1, etc. and especially on Medicine
and Anatomy. The cut at the beginning of this section represents an anatomi-
cal scene with 5 surgeons and a corpse, the viscera exposed. Another chapter
