Presentation copy with an original watercolour painting.
Very rare and interesting works describing a voyage to Surinam in Dutch Gui-
ana, South America. It contains also instructive chapters on the flora and fauna
of that country.
Exceptionally fine and desirable copy, one plate representing snakes being finely c o-
1 ou red by hand. Another plate repres. plants in bloom with colibris is replaced here
by the beautifully executed original water-colour painting (Schwechten fee.) The other plates
show a view of Philadelphia, vessels, inhabitants, a map, two ground plans of steam-boats, etc.
The fly-leaf bears the following dedication printed in gilt letters: “ Ihro Koenigliche
Hoheit der Princessin Charlotte von Preussen in tiefster Ehrfurcht iiberreicht von dem Ver-
fasser 1817.” This Prussian princess was the later Empress Alexandra Feodorowna of Russia,
consort of Nicholas I. There is also a book plate establishing the Imperial provenience of this
copy. In a fine state of preservation.
