official sessions, would be an occasion to exchange experiences on active
archaeological activities.
When one reads titles of suggested speeches, we notice at once that for us,
working in the ground, most important is that the results of the research, which
have not been published yet, will be presented here. There will be the newest
matters, usually resulting from the newest excavation works.
A Roman proverb says: "Grammatici certant et adhuc sub iadice lis est," which
means that "the scientists argue and the problem is not solved yet." I think that the
words of Horatio describe the situation in which scientists interested in the Roman
limes and those interested in Barbaricum problems find themselves. The morę we
discuss, the morę we discover doubts which start to arise, because the picture that
used to be elear at the beginning fades away and looses contours. We should not
be discouraged, because the lack of the trustworthiness means modesty towards the
history, sets out new paths of investigations, and gives the guarantee that such
meetings will always be necessary. Even if we do not solve a given problem, we
will always make a further step towards the truth.
Exhibition presented main works of the Polish archaeologists from Warsaw,
among them were excavations from South America, Europę, Near and Far East.
There were also organised post-conference excursions to: the castle of Malbork,
Gdańsk and famous cathedral in Oliwa where participants heard an organ concert.
In each of these places a lecture was presented: on Rzucewo culture and ancient
amber workshops, history of sites and the newest archaeological excavations in
Poland.
The conference could not have been organised without the Financial support
of all our sponsors, including the Scientific Research Committee, the Ministry
of National Education, Warsaw University, and Hortex Sp. z o.o., Oddział
Z.P.O.W. Hortex (05-530 Góra Kalwaria, ul. Pijarska 21) — whom we would
like to thank kindly.
