NORTH-EASTERN OUTPOST OF ANCIENT WORLD
Tanais is situated in the delta of Don on the high right bank of the main branch
of the river about 35 km west of modern town Rostov-on-Don (Fig. 1). Information
about this settlement we have from antiąue 1 iterary sources: for example, Strabo has
written that "it was the biggest emporium after Pantikapaion in the trading ratę
between Greeks and local barbarian tribes."
