détermine certain tunes (e.g. Podhale region). Thus they płay a practical role in communication between the members of a
community.

The criteria of division are seldom uniform. Most frequently, they are a heterogenous mixture of aspects : constituent, funct-
ional, formal-textual, formal-musical, performing etc. Consequently, it is impossible to reconstruct a purely apricri and ana-
lytic grouping of the folklore, and of différences in contents. Field studies are the only method for reconstruction of local folk
, .classifications".

Folk methods of grouping own musical traditions are highly differentiated in particular régions, but they show variations
also within the same area, as may usually be substantiated, e.g. by the âge of those providing the information, the state of pré-
servation of traditional culture, and the degree of infiltration of the new répertoire of mélodies. However, in generał outline
— the only exception being perhaps the southern régions of Poland — Polish folklore groupings, song and melodie, possess
certain points of convergence, even when such are expressed by différent names and concern stylistically différent materiał. Of
interest are the names denoting songs sung in open spaces, which are linked with the characteristic landscape of the given area :
polne, leśne, polanowe, wierchowe.

Comparative studies concerning folk musie of the Slavs seem to be of interest for future researches. Several common names
enable us, irrespective of morphologival différences in materiał covered by the given names, to suppose that thèse are archaic
catégories, which during the processes of change covered other materiał, new or changing.
