IT raust be an effectual check to the vanity of man, when he considers that by 'the de-
crees and difpositions of fupreme wifdom, neither the corporeal nor the mental faculties
are ever all united in one perfon ; but that for the maintenance and good order os fociety,
the gists of nature, combined in a continually varied proportion, are with a marvellous
cecomony divided and diftributed amongft the several individuals of our species j fo that, how
extenfwe foever his capacity may be, how prompt his apprehenfion, how mighty his flrength,
with the moft exalted ambition, man will neverthelefs fland in need os man. From the powers
of the human being thus limited it is, that when we furvey the progrefs os genius either in the
practices of art or the speculations of science, we sind they never received their persection srom
the feme man who gave them birth; new inventions however valuable have for the moil part
