vitality in his busts of Mr. Arthur Wing Pinero feels most strongly the influence of his own country
and of Mr. Paderewski. Of this latter work in his work. His miniatures hold the wealth of
we reproduce here the original drawing in black- colour and exquisite transparencies, the delicate
and-white, which, even more than the marble, nuances of light and shade in the'flesh tints that
renders the individuality of the celebrated pianist. the old Italian miniature painters so gloried in.

who, still a young man, is
on the upward path of his
development.

Signor Ugo Catani, an
Italian miniature painter
of distinction, is fast be-
coming known in England.
He is a Florentine by
birth, and his early studies
were carried on in the
Academy of Art in Florence.
He has travelled exten-
sively, and many lands have
contributed to the develop-
ment of his art, yet one portrait of mr. isay
