The design for a war memorial chapel
at Westminster, by Major C. J. C. Pawley,
V.D.,has aroused great interest. It is part
of an ambitious scheme of his which takes
the form of a new city, in which it is sug-
gested there should be established “ a seat
of learning and surroundings and associa-
tions which will both recall the great past
of our country and commemorate and keep
alive the heroic incidents and episodes of
this war. In designing the War Shrine as
a temple of the heroes of the war, Major
Pawley's idea has been to erect a Gothic
building where light is to be the dominant

note; and window space is consequently
a significant feature of it. The Shrine,
as designed, is in the shape of a Greek
cross, the measurement in each direction
being 300 feet, and provision within is
made for seventy-eight recesses in the form
of small memorial chapels. a a
Our last illustration is of a Shrine which
it is proposed to erect in Portland stone
on a grassy slope in the public gardens
at Wolverhampton. The figure is life-size
and in full relief, and the base of the cross
bears the inscription, “ As He died to
make men holy, so these died to make men
free.” Mr. Brownsword, the designer, is
head master of the local School of Art. a
