THE DRUMMOND COLLECTION

“A STORM OFF THE COAST ”
BY EUGENE ISABEY

THE DRUMMOND COLLECTION

THE announcement made last May that
the famous collection of pictures be-
longing to the late Sir George Drummond,
of Montreal, was to be brought to London
for sale caused considerable satisfaction
in English art circles. The sale, the ar-
rangements for which were carried out
by Mr. Croal Thomson, of Barbizon
House, was held at Messrs. Christie’s on
June 26 and 27, and the result more than
justified the high value placed on the col-
lection by those acquainted with it, the two
hundred and nine pictures realizing over
£150,000. a a a a a
Sir George Drummond was a collector
possessing sound judgment, and his interest
was not confined to any particular School.
Of his pictures by the old masters the
most notable was the portrait by Frans
Hals of Joseph Coymans, Lord of Bruchem
and Nieuwaal (p. 90). This noble work
was acquired by Messrs. Agnew for

25,500 guineas (an auction record for a
Hals), and we are glad to hear that it is to
remain in England. For another early
Dutch picture, A Woman cutting Bread and
Butter for a Boy who is saying Grace, by
Pieter de Hooghe, Messrs. Knoedler paid
7600 guineas ; while the same firm gave
6200 guineas for a beautiful Guardi, A
Fete on the Grand Canal, Venice. Goya’s
Portrait of Pepe Illo, the bull-fighter of
Madrid (p. 91); a Velasquez Portrait of
Mariana of Austria, wife of King Philip
IV of Spain (p. 89); and one of Van
Dyck's numerous renderings of Queen
Henrietta Maria were amongst the other
important examples of the Continental
Schools. a a a a a
Of the English pictures we reproduce
Morland’s Gipsies (p. 88), with its de-
lightful autumnal colouring. Turner's
stormy Port Ruysdael, exhibited at the
Royal Academy in 1827, fetched 6400
guineas (Messrs. Knoedler); while the
same artist’s superb drawing of Zurich
