THE DRUMMOND COLLECTION

GIPSIES.” BY
GEORGE MORLAND

created an auction record for his water-
colours when Messrs, Agnew bid 6200
guineas for it. 0000

Two interesting incidents on the first
day of the sale were the purchase of Dau-
bigny’s Le Retour du Troupeau for 7800
guineas byA Lady Drummond, and of
Corot's L'lle Heureuse by Mr. Croal
Thomson for 6800 guineas (on behalf of
Mr. Huntley Drummond), both for pre-
sentation to the Montreal Gallery. The
collection included another larger canvas
by Corot called Evening, and a small panel
of fine quality by him of his beloved Ville
d’Avray. Among the other Barbizon
pictures were a second Daubigny, On the
Oise; The Woodland Path, by Diaz, a
good example ; The Shepherdess, by J. F.
Millet; and A Summer Storm, by Troyon.

A spirited work by Isabey, called A Storm
off the Coast (p. 87), a tranquil Moonlight
by Harpignies (p. 92), two small panels
by Daumier, and a portrait by Degas
figured amongst the other French pictures.

Another auction record was made when
Messrs. Wallis and Son bid 4800 guineas
for Age and Infancy, by Josef Israels,
which was exhibited at the Royal Academy
in 1872. James Maris's Cottage on the
Dunes and Mauve’s Ploughing realized
1500 and 2500 guineas respectively; while
for a charming little example of the art
of Matthew Maris, A Girl with Goat
and Kid (which Sir George Drummond
is said to have picked up in New York for
200 dollars), Mr. Croal Thomson had to pay
3600 guineas. A small panel by Whistler,
La Note Rouge, fetched 900 guineas. 0
