IMPRESSIONS OF GRANADA

position to describe it, my sole possible
rival being the Cura of San Nicolas, were
he given to looking out of window,
which, I have observed, he is not. With the
changing seasons, with the rising or setting
of the sun, this wondrous panorama under-
goes a thousand variations. There, below,
lies the city, with its tiled roofs mellowed
and lichened with the centuries, its houses
clustered on either side of the Dauro or
river of gold, so called from the grains of
that precious metal which are extracted
from its sandy bed. A tiny stream in
summer, the Dauro trickles feebly over
its grey pebbles, but in the rainy seasons
it swells to a ruddy torrent whose roar can
be heard in San Nicolas, and in whose
sudden fury animals and sometimes men
are caught up and swept away by the
impetuous ruth of its foaming waters. 0
To the right the bulky mass of the
cathedral rises above the more modern
part of the town which, as the valley
widens, stretches out towards the fertile
Vega, bounded on the western horizon

by the distant mountains. Above all this
and facing the slopes of Albaicin, on an
abrupt hill rising sheer above the Dauro,
stands the palace of the Alhambra, and its
adjoining fortress or Alcazaba. The

massive reddish towers and walls, in their
stern outward appearance, give no hint
of the fantastic loveliness of the courts
and halls within, yet there are few more
gorgeous colour patterns than that afforded
by Boabdihs stronghold when the sinking
sun blazes aslant on its crumbling battle-
ments, dyeing them orange, vermilion
and blood-red in rapid succession. 0
Nor does the irregular outline of the
Alhambra complete the picture, for from
this vantage-point the highest peaks of
the Sierra Nevada are seen to form a
glistening crown for the royal residence of
the Moorish kings. There, far beyond
the valley of Genii, the saw-like range
towers heavenward, its eternal snows
sparkling in the ccol white morning-light
or flushed pink in the rich warm glow of
evening. a a 0 0 a
