committee. The new note in art was not
especially visible, and yet the show was
sufficiently modern to make it interesting.
Gouache and tempera were in evidence,
and there was discernible a tendency
towards pure aquarelle handled freely and
boldly, a 0 0 0 0 0

One of the groups having this quality
was a series of nude studies in water-
colours, by Mr. Earl Horter. Spring
Days in the City of Washington formed
the motif of a group of delightfully
spontaneous works by Mr. Joseph Pennell.
Near-by was a group, totally different
in treatment, by Mr. Birger Sandmen,
highly decorative paintings giving the
impression of the fantastic shapes and
variegated colours of certain mountains
of the Far West. Scenes in the Saguenay
region of Canada, by Mr. Frank W.
Benson, handled with convincing insight.

made up a group of six. Delightfully free
in handling and expression of essentials
was The Plage, St. Malo, by Mr. Ray
Kinsman Waters, apparently a recent
arrival in the coterie of water-colour
painters, but one who promises to go far.
Mr. Wilmot E. Heitland sent an attractive
group, docks around New York, bits of
Florida, old streets in Philadelphia. 0
Effective use of gouache as medium was
seen in Miss Catherine Morris's present-
ments of the Rhode Island Coast. A
number of impressionistic pastels, harbour
views mainly, having the decorative
quality of richly coloured tapestry, were
sent by Mr. Charles S. Kaelin. 0 0

Miss Waldo Howell, Mr. Hayley Lever,
Mr. J. J. Dull, Miss Alice Schille and Mr.
Claggett Wilson were represented by
groups in pure aquarelle that fully sus-
tained their established positions. 0
