The date of the carving is 1478. It was
made for the country villa built by Albizzi,
Leonardo's friend, at the village of Sant’
Ilario, just south of Signa and close to
Florence. It remained there for more than
four centuries, untouched save by several
coats of whitewash, and has therefore a

longer and more direct history than any of
Leonardo's works except the Last Supper.
It was obviously one of the many pieces
of sculpture (hitherto undiscovered) on the
reputation of which the artist was given
the famous commission for the Cavallo
when he went to Milan less than four years
later. The type and expression of the
Madonna's profile are most characteristic of
Leonardo. a a a a
