THE ROYAL ACADEMY EXHIBITION, 1923

Anning Bell are of special interest. Both
rooms contain much else worthy of
attention, 0 0 0 0 0

The sculpture is, on the whole, a little
unimpressive—partly, no doubt, because
the conditions under which it is exhibited
do it less than justice—and includes a
smaller proportion than usual of ambitious
efforts. The statue. The Unfolding of Spring,
by Mr. Gilbert Bayes, has great beauty as
a decoration. Sir W. Goscombe John's vast
group, The Response, 1914, is an achieve-
ment of much importance, and the figures
for war memorials by Mr. C. S. Jagger
have a large measure of rugged power ;
and there is a group, Nature, by Mr, W.

McMillan, which can be highly praised for
its delicacy of modelling and grace of line.
Other noteworthy things come from Mr.
Drury, Mr. Pomeroy, Mr. F. M. Taubman,
Mr. Derwent Wood, Sir Bertram Mac-
kennal, Mr. R. Garbe, Sir Hamo Thorny-
croft and Mr. Reynolds-Stephens, and
there is an interesting group of exhibits
illustrative of the work of the Royal Mint
during the past year. 000
