XXXIII. CHIOS (PHANA)
Phana lies close to the southern extremity of Chios. Here, in 1913, Kourouniotis
excavated the site of the temple of "Apollo in Phanai". The following objects were
found in a geometric deposit within the wall of the precinct.
As this is one of the few sites which have been excavated on the island, since the
end of Turkish rule made excavation possible, we must wait for further evidence
before we can state the duration of the connection between this powerful and rich
island and Egypt. That there was such connection we know, not only from this stray
piece of evidence but also from the fact that the Chians, together with the Aeginetans,
Milesians and Samians, were among the original "claim holders" at Naucratis and
shared in the Hellenion (Herodotus, 11. 180).
