XVI. VAPHIO
Vaphio in Laconia is situated about five miles to the south of Sparta in the low
hills to the west of the Eurotas. One tholos tomb has been discovered there in a very
ruinous condition. It dates probably from Late Helladic II. Its most famous contents
are of course the two Vaphio cups of gold repousse work with figures of oxen, wild
and tame.
