XXXV. SAM OS

Although we know from literary sources of the close connection between Samos
and Egypt, excavation has brought to light but one Egyptian object—and the context
of that has been lost. Samos was one of the first in the field at Naucratis, and a little
later her tyrant Polycrates was on terms of personal friendship and alliance with
Pharaoh Aahmes II (Amasis). Prior to this there is no evidence for intercourse, Samos
was—and until lately almost always has been—part of Asia Minor, and it seems as if
her history in the Bronze Age has no more connection with the outer world than as a
mere stepping-stone for waves of intruders who have left a trace of their stay in the
Early and Middle Helladic pottery.
