XVIII. MENELAION
The Menelaion, sanctuary of Helen and Menelaus, and perhaps the actual site of
the Mycenaean Palace, lies about three miles from Sparta on the other side of the
Eurotas, on a conspicuous spur of Therapne. Its remains form a sort of small stepped
pyramid, built up round a spur of rock. Round it have been found many remains of
Mycenaean houses, but the pyramid itself dates from the latter half of the seventh
century at the earliest.
