IV. DICTAEAN CAVE (PSYKHRO)

The Dictaean Cave is situated above the upland plain of Psykhro in the Lasithi
Mountains about fifteen minutes' climb from the village of Psykhro. It was a place
for sacred offerings from Middle Minoan times until the beginning of the eighth
century, for the pottery begins with a small deposit of Kamares ware and ends in
good Geometric times without a trace of Oriental influence. The excavators suggest
that its associations may then have been moved to the Idaean Cave.

The cave consists of an upper and a lower grotto, in the latter of which, from the
mud at the bottom, the statuette No. 15 was extracted.
