XVII. SPARTA

It is only in the Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia that any Egyptian objects have come
to light. This is perhaps natural, since that is the only site which dates from a time
when Sparta took the same interest in trade as the rest of the Greek world.

The objects are from the lowest stratum of the sanctuary, and the pottery context
is purely Geometric. This places it not later than 750 B.C.

In this case it must be rather the surroundings which date the scarabs than vice versa,
for with one exception the following works are unfortunately in a very bad condition,
which has in some cases precluded strict identification.

Besides these objects, one has only to look through the pages of any work on early
Spartan statuettes to see a striking resemblance at first glance to Egyptian examples.
This resemblance is chiefly due to the presence of a wig—or it may be some method
of dressing the hair which gives a general likeness to the Egyptian wig or striped head-
cloth. Whether this is due to a definite Egyptian influence or to mere coincidence it
is hard to determine.

Since the above was in print I have been privileged to see the forthcoming full
publication of the site. The additional objects from the same stratum will be found
on page 109 of this book (immediately after Thera).
