XXXVI. THERA

Thera has always played an unimportant part in history. There is no record of her
trade with foreign lands. Herodotus (iv. 149) says that the island was colonized by
the Spartans under Theras, and certainly the two following objects bear a striking
resemblance in style, date and context to those scarabs found in the earliest stratum
of the Sanctuary of Orthia at Sparta (q.v.). The tomb they came from is on the hill of
Sellada just above the site of the town in the south-east corner of the island.
