XXX. VELESTINO (PHERAE)

Pherae, always one of the chief towns of Thessaly, lies some way inland to the west
of the northern point of the Pagasaean Gulf. As is the case with the rest of early
Thessaly, we know little or nothing of its early history until the perfection of the
League soon before 700B.C.; but it must have been the centre of a landed aristocracy.

Since there were no trading interests it is surprising that any foreign object has
found its way thither; it is probably a "souvenir" brought back by some Thessalian
adventurer of the Geometric Age. More we cannot say until the publication of other
finds takes place, among which are said to be scarabs and works in faience.
