INCUNABULA
46 S. CYPRIANUS, CAECILIUS, episc. Carthag. Epistolae. N. p. d.
(Stuttgart, Printer of the Erwahlung Maximilians, ca. 1486.)
Fol. Gothic letter, 46 lines, 132 unn. 11. without sign., the first
1. blank. Fine original binding, brown stamped leather over wooden
boards, 2 borders of fine ornamental stamps, 2 clasps; slightly dam.
Frs. 1600-
Hain*-Cop. 5805. Proctor 2750. Brit. Mus. Cat. Ill, p. 675-
The only impression of Stuttgart printed before 1500, the "Erwahlung
Maximilians”, a pamphlet of 8 leaves, excepted. ’’The capital I and two border-
pieces on the first page of text of the ’Erwahlung’ had been previously used by
Conrad Fyner at Urach, in or about 1481. It is conceivable, that Fyner came
to Stuttgart in i486 and printed these books (i. e. the "Erwahlung” and the
Cyprianus). More probably, however, he died or gave up business in or before
1485, and the printer of the ’Erwahlung’ purchased some of his stock.” (Brit.
Mus. Cat. Ill, p. 675.)
The Brit. Mus. Cat. mentions still another undated book printed by this
press, but Voullieme, Die deutschen Drucker, p. 160 does not mention it.
This is the first edition of the Epistolae of Cyprianus prin-
ted in Germany. These letters are not only an important source of history
of church life and of ecclesiastical law, on account of their rich and manifold
contents, but in large part they are important monuments of the literary activity
of their author, since they are mostly in the form of treatises upon the topic in
question.
Quite complete copy of this very interesting and extremely
rare product of an anonymous Stuttgart-press. Some leaves slightly
stained, a few marginal notes, in 1. F7 a rent repaired.
No copy in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).
47 FABER DE WERDEA, JOH. Tractatulus de eo, an licitum sit,
diebus festivis intendere disciplinis bonarum artium. N. p. d. (Leipzig,
Martin Landsberg, about 1496.)
4to. Goth, letters, 33 lines, 10 unn. 11. with sign. With the
printer’s device of Landsberg at end. Bds. Frs. 250.—
Hain* 6857. Not in Proctor and the Brit. Mus. Cat.
The only edition printed in the 15th century. Rare product of Lands-
berg’s press, printed with his types 1 and 5.
The author wrote many fasciculi containing moral poems during the last
years of the 15th century.
Good copy of this small booklet, slightly stained in places.
No copy in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).
