NATURAL SCIENCES

ALBERTUS MAGNUS
Albert von Bollstadt, O. Pr., the Great Theologian, Philoso-
pher and Natural Philosopher, Bishop of Regensburg, born
at Lauingen in 1193, died at Cologne in 1280.
189 Summa de creaturis. 2 parts in one vol. Venice, Simon de Lucre
for Andreas Torresanus, 1498-99.
Fol. Goth, letter, 2 cols., 69 lines, 197 num. leaves, the last blank
missing. Old vellum, marbled edges. Frs. 750.—
Gesamtkatalog 779. Hain*-Cop. 569. Proctor 5621. Brit. Mus. Cat. V, 574.
The first and only complete edition of Albert’s the Great Summa, one of his
most important dogmatic works. It treats in the first part „de quattuor coaevis”
with the questions „De materia”, „De aeternitate et tempore”, „De coelo, de aliis
coelis, de stellis” and „De angelis”. This, and the second part „De ho mine” are
not only of philosophical and theological interest, but are also important for the history
of natural sciences.
One of the first products of Simon de Luere^ in a good copy with old ms. notes
and with few stains in places.

S. AMBROSIUS
Church-Father, Bishop of Milan, born probably at Trier about
340, died at Milan in 397-
190 Hexameron seu de principiis rerum. Augsburg, Johann Sdiiissler, 1472.
Fol. Goth, letter, spaces in the text for Greek words, 35 lines, 77
unn. leaves, the last blank, the first, blank, is wanting. Boards. Frs. 900.—
Gesamtkatalog 1603. Hain* 903- Proctor 1,595- Voullieme, Berlin, 56. Brit.
Mus. Cat. II, 329 (imperfect copy, quoting only 72 leaves).
This exegesis of the Creation belongs to the most important works of the great
Church-Father. It is also of great interest on account of its natural descriptions,
the sources of which having been Basilius, Aelianus and Plinius.
A fine imprint, especially remarkable for the contrast of text- and capital let-
ters. It is printed by Johann Schiissler, the second printer of Augsburg, who
acquired his stock of letters from Zainer in 1470 and up to his last book, an Augu-
stinus de Ancona, published in 1473, he only used type I of Zainer. Altogether he
printed only 10 works, all of which are distinguished by their accuracy and beauty of
arrangement. The present book has a typographical peculiarity. The text breaks off
on fol. 49vo, line 18, with the words “Se”, Fugerat nos fratres, &c. On the next leaf
the text begins with the same words. This indicates that the book was printed on
two presses. — Fine copy.
See Reproduction, page 128.
