Flavio Biondo, Historian and Archaeologist, Apostolic Secretary,
born at Forli in 1388, died at Rome in 1463.
1 Romae instauratae libri III. De origine et gestis Venetorum. — Italiae
illustratae libri VIII. 2 pts. in 1 vol. Verona, Boninus de Boninis,
1481-82.
Fol. Goth, letter, 86 lines, 152 unn. leaves (leaves 58 and 152 blank)
with sign. Rubricated throughout, with many capitals supplied in red. Original
binding, nicely blind stamped brown calf over wooden boards. Frs. 1200.—
Hain*-Cop. 3243 and 3247- Proctor 6920. Potthast I, 16o.
Very rare second edition of these famous historical works, written about 1450.
The first one gives a detailed description of all antiquitie s of Rome. It is follo-
wed by an epitome of Venitian history and the compendious historical and topographic
description of Italy.
It is the first product of this press which issued at Verona only 2 other works.
The two parts have separate colophons and signatures, but are both included in the
Register at the end.
Very fine copy with large margins, the first and last leaves si. browned,
in the lower blank margin of the last leaves a small wormhole.

Johannes Jovianus PONTANUS
Italian Humanist and Poet, Tutor to the sons of Alphonso the
Magnanimous, born at Cereto, died at Naples in 1503.

EDITIO PRINCEPS. Finely executed specimen of an incunabulum printed at Naples.
Imprints of Naples with the date and name of the press are extre-
mely rare.
Dibdin praises its „style of typographical elegance . . . On a slight inspection
of the contents, they appear to be both amusing and instructive, having several elegant
specimens of poetry interspersed”. The first of these two dialogues glorifying the
antiquity is held in the Hades ,dealing with philosophical matters. The second one
between a „hospes” and some inhabitants of Naples treats of Italy during the
Greek and Roman epoch.
