BERNARDUS CLARAEVALLENSIS
The Great Mystic, Founder and Abbot of Clairveaux, born at
Fontaines-les-Dijon, died at Clairveaux in 1153.
60 Epistolae cum aliis tractatibus. N. p. d. (Strafiburg, Heinr. Eggestein,
ca. 1475).
Large-fol. Goth, letter, 2 cols., 60—61 lines, 89 unn. leaves. Capital
spaces supplied in red. Blind stamped pigskin. Frs. 1000.—

1, 71—72. Voullieme, Berlin 2144. Potthast I, 149.
A very fine impression by the famous Strafiburg printer Egge-
stein, printed with the same type as used in the First German Bible.
This First Edition contains 296 Epistles, addressed to kings, the Pope, prin-
ces, princesses, prelates, down to the simple nun and the anachorite, being very
interesting and important for the criticism of contemporary history. Two letters of
political and spiritual content are addressed to the “Regina iherosolimorum”.
Fine large copy with old marginal annotations. First and last leaf somewhat
spotted; at the commencement a few wormholes. From the Buxheim-Library.
Only 3 copies in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).
Blondus, Flavius. See Section Archaeology.

Hain*-Cop. 3667. Proctor 5831. Potthast I, 167: „Verrath ernste Wahrheitsliebe“.
EDITIO PR1NCEPS of this famous chronicle, printed by the first press at
Milan. It contains a curious note on Gutenberg under the year 1457: Hoc anno sa-
lutifera doctrinarum omnium imprimendorum librorum ars auctore johanne Gutemberg
germano reperta est. At end we find 5 leaves containing an important list of the bi-
shops and archbishops of Milan, beginning with the year 40 A. D. The first leaf
with the genealogy of the Visconti is very rare and wanting in many copies.
Our copy is in very good condition. An early owner has added many MS.
annotations to the list of the bishops at end, some 11. are slightly waterstained, two
small wormholes in blank margins at end, in 1. t1 a rent.
Only 3 copies in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).
