protestanckich. Różnice pomiędzy rycinami a malowidłami w Stegnie wskazu-
lic Gdańska przetrwał do naszych czasów w niemalże niezmienionej formie.
Ponadto obok oryginalnego, bogatego wyposażenia wnętrza, posiada on nie-
zwykłe - bo wykonane na płótnie - malowidła stropowe i ścienne.

Graphic Models for the Painting Decoration of the Ceiling and Walls of
the Church of the Sacred Heart at Stegna
The Church of the Sacred Heart at Stegna on the Vistula Sandbar was raised in 1681 -83
after the design of the architect Peter Willer active in Gdańsk. His implementation to-
gether with the decor have survived until today almost unchanged. The hall interior of
the church is covered with wooden pseudo-tunnel vaulting decorated with paintings
executed in distemper on canvas in 1688.
Those were most likely authored by Reihnold Schneider from Gdańsk. The central
motif of the ceiling decoration is The Resurrection. Its eastern part features The Parable
of the Ten Maidens and Jesus and the Samańtan Woman, whereas the western side is
decorated with The Resurrection ofLazarus and The Carrying of the Cross; The Last Judg-
ment is shown above the chancel. The churchs walls feature the following: The Entry into
Jerusalem, The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, The Parable ofthe Sower, and Jacobs Dream.
The artist created a transparent, unambiguous, and thoroughly conceived iconographic
programme, typical of Protestant churches, also based on popular graphic models, as
the present paper attempts to demonstrate. The artist most frequently followed copper-
plate engravings executed by Matthaeus Merian, included in the subseąuent editions
of Luthers Bibie after 1630. Some of the Stegna paintings constituted a faithful copy of
selected prints, while others, faithful in composition, were essentially simplified.
Three of the representations in the Stegna Church find their analogies with the
Neuen Testaments. It can be assumed that the authors of analogical representations in
both works followed one common model, namely the graphic versions of the works
by Peter Paul Rubens and Annibale Carracci.
