Travel Grants of Gdańsk Builders, Fortification Constructors and Architects
in the First Half of the 17th Century. An Input to the Study of Career Paths
and the Role of an Architect in an Ancient Town
This paper tackles the issue of a specific aspect of architecture in Gdańsk in the
Golden Age. It presents archival materiał pertinent to the education of architects em-
ployed in the municipal service in the first half of the 17th century, which to datę has
been either unidentified or misinterpreted. Pinpointing the weakly recognised aspects
of municipal policy at a time when the most important pieces of public investment
were madę, the Writer suggests that the high ąuality of Gdańsk buildings emerged
from their architects very good orientation in theoretical discourse and the building
practice of the then Europę. That fact was thanks to grants given by a municipal coun-
cil to young builders, fortification constructors and architects for stays of even a few
years in Italian and Dutch centres.
The Reader can view the scalę of expenditure, recorded in the books of Gdańsk Mu-
nicipal Revenue for those grants. Funded by the Municipal Council, grants are inter-
preted on the basis of source materiał. Using the fund records, the author makes a wider
reflection on the definition of the architect, the understanding of his role and his social
position, resulting from the path of his professional education. This paper also presents
the use of those grants, their amounts and the most freąuent places grantees resided.
The newly discovered materiał serves as the background for an analysis of po-
tential sources of knowledge on architecture, a presentation of the artistic geography
of travels described in the paper, along with their potential influence on the type of
education and models absorbed during their education. This study can be counted
among attempts at finding an answer to the ąuestion about routes by which modern
architectural thought was transferred to the Gdańsk area, while not refraining from
a commentary on the achievements of hitherto studies.
The main conclusion from these considerations is an emphasis on the effective and
conspicuous role of the Municipal Council as a determinant on the directions of the
transfer of knowledge on modern architecture.
