2 The Fenian Movement in Canada.—The Canadian
Volunteer’s and the United States Government had together
put an end to the absurd and mischievous irruption of
Fenians into Canada.
3 Address to the Reform Club.—At the close of a
Reform Demonstration held on the 29th of June, in Tra-
falgar Square, the people, after cheering in front of Mr.
Gladstone’s house in Carlton Gardens, traversed Pall Mall,
cheering and hooting as they passed the Reform and other
clubs on their route.
4 Two Eighteenths of June.—See “Introduction” and
“Essence of Parliament,” page 13, for notices of the “ ten
days” war between Prussia and Italy, Austria and part of
Germany.
11 Captain Cowper Coles and his Turret Ship.—Cap-
tain Cowper Phipps Coles, R.N., the inventor of armed
turret ships. He was lost in “The Captain” (the turret
ship of which he was the designer), when that vessel went
down in September, 1870.
12 The New Librarian.—Me. J. Winter Jones had been
appointed Principal Librarian, British Museum.
13 Beales within Beales.—Mr. Beales, who at this time
was taking a prominent part in Reform meetings, was a
Revising Barrister for Middlesex (see also “ Introduction ”)
15 Under the Sea!—Engineei'S are now (1876) making
experimental borings for a Tunnel under the Channel.

31 The New Judge.—Sir Eitzroy Kelly had been made
Lord Chief Baron on the resignation of Sir P. Pollock

36 Proposed Motto for Prussia.—Refers to the supe-

Hydraulic News.—This and other entries (See p. 85,
&c.) refer to Mr. Walpole, the Home Secretary, who was
said to have been “much affected ” when receiving a depu-
tation from the Reform League with reference to the Riot
in Hyde Park.
Chang.—A Chinese giant at this time exhibiting him-
self in the Egyptian Hall.
The late Sir John Thwaites, the Chairman of the Me-
tropolitan Board of Works, being prevented by illness from
laying the first stone of the Southern Embankment, Mr.
(afterwards Sir William) Tite officiated in his stead.
A Geographical Error.—In Foil-hommerum Bay,
near Valentia, on the Coast of Ireland, was our shore end of
the Atlantic Cable, just successfully completed. (See also
“Introduction,” “The Missing Link Found,” p. 55, “For
Better or Worse,” p. 63, &c.)
A Cool Hint.—The late Mr. Alfred Mellon was
Conductor of these Concerts.
Fresh Game for Mr. Punch.—The Derby Ministry,
some of their parliamentary supporters, the new Judges,
the newly created Baron—Lord Lytton, &c.
“ The Critic ” (slightly altered).—The First Lord of the
Admiralty (Sir John Pakington) had spoken of the Navy
as in a most unsatisfactory condition (See “ Essence of Par-
liament,” p. 70, Monday).

Artemus Ward in London.—The first of a series of
papers contributed to Punch by the celebrated American
Humourist “Artemus Ward” (Charles F. Browne), who
visited England this year, and appeared in an entertain-
ment at the Egyptian Hall. He died at Southampton,
March 6, 1867.
The Revised Barrister.—Mr. Beales had been re-
moved from his appointment as Revising Barrister for
