5 A Virtuous Vestry.—Colonel Henderson is the Chief
Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.
10 Monody on M'Grath.—See "Notes" to Vol. LX., pp.
104, 107. The dog died December, 1871.

12 Christmas Present for Sir Charles Dilke.— See "In-
troduction " to last volume.

15 Fair Play for Looshai.—So far back as the beginning
of 1871, Looshai tribes invaded North-East India, and car-
ried off a little English girl of the name of Winchester.
British and native troops were sent to rescue her and the
child was brought to England in April, 1872.

17 " Off Greenwich" (Cartoon).—Mb. Bright, who had
resigned his seat in the Cabinet and retired from public life
for a time in consequence of ill-health, was now better, and
able to resume his place among the supporters of the Govern-
ment in Parliament. The Premier (Mr. Gladstone) was
member for Greenwich.

23 "Donne's Satires."—Mr. W. B. Donne was at this
time " Examiner of Plays," and seems in his official capa-
city to have been striking out political allusions from the
pantomimes. Dr. Donne (1573—1631) was one of our
earliest satirists.

23 A Coming Retirement.—See "Notea" to last volume,
p. 276.

26 From Galway to Candy.—The "iEdile" was Mr.
Ayrton, then First Commissioner of Works, and not con-
sidered to be too favourably inclined to art interests.

27 A Still Bigger "Claimant" {Cartoon).—Eefers to the
outrageous claims put forth by a party in the United States
for compensation for indirect damages caused by the
Alabama, &c. (See " Introduction.")

31 "If!"—This refers to a project for providing improved
Channel communication between England and France, sup-
ported by Mr. John Fowler, the eminent Civil Engineer.

31 A Buried Army.—" Interred " was a misprint for " in-
terned." During the Franco-German war, the remainder
of the French Army under Bourbaki being obliged to pass
into Switzerland, were received into that country on condi-
tion of laying down their arms, and being "interned" as
prisoners on a neutral soil.

33 A Jingle for St. James's.—The Monday Popular Con-
certs at St. James's Hall.

37 Too much Pressure (Cartoon).—See '' A Seat on a Safety
Valve," p. 36.

40 Sporting News.—Mr. F. S. Powell was the Conser-
vative, Mr. Isaac Holden the Liberal Candidate for the
North-West Riding of Yorkshire. Mr. Powell was
elected.

42 "Your Bonnet to its Right Use."—Cardinal Cullen,
the determined opponent of the National (Mixed) Schools
in Ireland, and the supporter of Denominational Education.
He had presided over a recent Eoman Catholic meeting in

Dublin, in favour of denominational education. j Ballad," p. 102.

The New Judge.—Mr. Justice Quain appointed to the 42

Queen's Bench.

Owls that is not Horgans. — The three Doctors who 45
attended the Prince of Wales in his illness were Sir Wil-
liam Jenner, Sir William Gull, and Dr. Lowe.

The Phantom Board. — Compare "True Thomas of 48
Chelsea," p. 43, and " Spiritualism for Sailors," p. 54. &
Mr. Vernon Lushington was permanent Secretary to the 49
Admiralty.

Beyond Suspicion.—The "City Oratory," was a cele- 58
brated Nonconformist Chapel.

Sarcasms Crystallized, &c.—Mr. Samuel Laing was 64
at this time Chairman of the London and Brighton Rail-
way.

The Old "Whip."—Mr. Brand, the new Speaker in 71
the room of Mr. Denison (who on his resignation, after
fifteen years' service, was created Viscount Ossington), was
formerly one of the Government " Whips" in the House of
Commons.

The State and the Sack.—See "Essence of Parliament," 75
p. 68 (Thursday).

For the Fourteenth.—" The Claimant's " leading coun- 76
sel in the great Tichborne Case was Mr. Serjeant Bax-

lantine.

Foreign Affairs.—Eefers to a Boundary Dispute—the 77
San Juan Water—between England and the United States.

Richard Southwell Bourke.—See" Essence of Parlia- 80
ment," p. 78 (Monday). The convict, Shere Ali, was
executed for his crime.

" The" Tuesday.—Tuesday, the 27th of February, the 87
day of the Thanksgiving Service at St. Paul's for the reco-
very of the Prince of Wales. The Queen, the Prince
and Princess of Wales, their two sons, and other mem-
bers of the Royal Family, went in procession to the Cathe-
dral, and the day was made the occasion of " the grandest
outburst of unanimous popular emotion witnessed since the
age of the Tudors."

New Title for Old Country Dance. "Just like 87
Roger."—A phrase which repeatedly came up in the Tich-
borne case.

" Beautiful for Ever."—Temple Bar was cleansed and 90
decorated for " Thanksgiving Day."

Bottom's Dream (Cartoon).—The loyalty shown on 103
" Thanksgiving Day " had proved the absence of repub-
lican feeling amongst the people. See "Peter Quince, his
