STUDIA WAWELIANA

In accordance with the wish of Professor Jerzy Szabłowski,
who died in 1989, the fifth volume of „Studia do Dziejów Wawelu"
(Studies on the History of Wawel), published in 1991, is the last in
the series. Apart from out intention to respect the will of the
originator and editor of this valuable publication, it would hardly be
justifled today to continue „Studia" in its original form. Until now
the edition has covered a wide rangę of problems from the geology of
the Wawel hill, to its archaeology and history, to artistic ąuestions.
The monumental size of the volumes, adopted as far bach as the
1950s, was naturally responsible for some difflculties in editing them
and for excessive costs bothfor the editor and purchasers. Therefore,
„Studia do Dziejów Wawelu" has been replaced by two series of
publications: „Studia Waweliana", devoted to historical and artistic
problems (including reviews and a chronicie of the activities of the
Wawel State Collections of Art), and „Acta Archaeologica Wawe-
liana", which will contain the materiał and papers concerning
archaeology. This dwision and a smaller size of the publications
should enable us to issue the successwe volumes of both series in
annual rhythm. Both editorial staffs comprise a group of specialists
representing various fields and for years concerned with the Wawel
problems; their collaboration should ensure a supply of materiał on
a high level. We hope that owing to the adoption ofthe Latin version
of titles (with the spelling of the name of Wawel in the form used
sińce the Middle Ages) as well as introduction of summaries in
English the new Wawel series willfind their way to wider circles of
readers abroad.
