The series of małe likenesses on the east wali begins with
a portrait of the emperor Theodosius II (and not Theodosius the
Great), followed by the emperor Justin II (and not Justin 1) and Justin
1 (and not Justinian the Great). The fourth is unąuestionably the
emperor Justinian II. It is hard to establish who is portrayed in the
fifth medallion; the fairly well preserved face may suggest the em-
peror Philippicos Bardanes. The penultimate head most probably
represents the emperor Tiberius II Apsimaros, while the last one is
undoubtedly a portrait of Theodosius 111. The first two likenesses on

the south wali represent probably the emperor Constantine VI and
unąuestionably the emperor Michael I Rangabe. The next medallion
contains a portrait of Charles the Bald (and not Charlemagne), fol-
lowed by Lothair I. The next head is a portrait of Berengarius II (and
not Berengarius I) followed by that of Otto III. The penultimate me-
dallion contains the head of Conrad II (conseąuently, we reject the
suggestion that this may be the emperor Conrad III), and the last one
- in all likelihood - a portrait of Henry IV and not, as hitherto sug-
gested, of Philip of Swabia.
