It is satisfactory to
know that an erudite
French philologist
gravely commented on
these precious lines,
and in all seriousness
translated them into
academic French.

Charles Jacque was
born in Paris in 1813.
At the age of thirteen
he was set to work
with an engraver of
maps; and although
he remained at that
employment for some
seven years, we may
feel sure he chafed at
